STEYR MO256H45
A STAR IS BORN

It was an important step forward to come to an agreement with MERCRUISER about the supplies of BRAVO stern drives to STEYR MOTORS.
After a first year of introduction the most competitive package of the light weight STEYR Diesels together with MERCRUISER BRAVO drives, STEYR MOTORS aimed to develop a fully - in all regards - competitive Diesel Power Package as an alternative solution to traditional V8-gasoline engines.

18 month of basic combustion research and fine-tuning resulted now in the introduction of the STEYR 256, the lightest, most compact and most dynamic alternative to gasoline engines. Based on the successful built scheme of the STEYR 236 & 246 we have invested our most experienced R&D-resources in a complete re-design of the charging and breathing system, engine management, injection timing, camshaft-housing and cover as well as piston & piston rings.
Extended durability test-runs finished the development of a unique power package which will be the backbone of further growth of the STEYR Marine business for many years. That new product will support the strategy of STEYR MOTORS to produce sportive-but reliable engines, in all regards competitive to gasoline marine engines - BUT burning diesel fuel, offering the same safety and fuel economy as the best automotive diesels.
Full concentration was given to the dynamics of the engine acceleration and after an exceptional good co-operation with the turbocharger manufacturer HOLSET and leading University Institutes, it was confirmed that the HOLSET- turbocharger technology, the load-capacity of the STEYR Monoblock and the powerful STEYR 2-stage Unit Injector can be merged to an exceptional Dynamics and Performance - fully competitive to large displacement gasoline V8's.
STEYR Marine diesels are well known to be the most gasoline-comparable diesels in the world, but more then ever the new STEYR 256 justifies that image. All the known good habits of STEYR Marine diesels could be carried over, like the low fuel consumption - which is in some map-area even lower then with the STEYR 246, the proven Electronic Management, Internal Diagnostic and Self Protection system. Relevant installation data like packaging dimensions and weight are showing just minor changes compared to the STEYR 236 & 246, all kind of adapters and transmission solutions are available without changes.
Most part of the application & dynamics development has been done in the HYDROLIFT S-24, a very sportive Powerboat from Norway which has been selected by the STEYR MOTORS' Engineering team for the one-to-one comparison the gasoline inboard engines. Many years of experience in the marine world, continuous development and customer-orientated product policy have resulted now in an exceptional new product of STEYR MOTORS. STEYR 256 - a star is born!
